Speaking of photos I found via Facebook, check out this photo of USS Georgia (SSGN 729) submerging after a recent port visit to Naples from the COMSUBGRU TEN Facebook page:

Keeping the blogosphere posted on the goings on of the world of submarines since late 2004... and mocking and belittling general foolishness wherever it may be found. Idaho's first and foremost submarine blog. (If you don't like something on this blog, please E-mail me; don't call me at home.)
I don't know if he's changed or not, but when COMSUBPAC was XO on my boat in the late 80s, he had a SERIOUS Napoleon complex. It seems to have served him well.
ReplyDeleteWhen he was the OIC of NPTU Charleston back in the early 90's, he seemed to be a pretty good guy. I don't think you can always fairly judge what sort of guy someone is when he is on his XO tour.
ReplyDeleteBoth CO and XO(COMSUBPAC)in the late 80's and early 90's went onto flag rank on the 677. What are the odds of that? Arrived in early 93 and was still hearing horror stories from the guys that had been on the boat for a while
ReplyDeleteI like the shot with Vesuvius in the background best. And where did those shiny tugs come from? I can't imagine anything in such a good state of repair in the Port of Naples.
ReplyDeleteIt's always been my experience that the CO/XO combination is like a hammer. The XO is the head of the hammer, always pounding home stuff but the CO has his fist firmly around the handle.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I was pretty lucky to have some great CO/XO combination's. As I stated on previous posts, Skip Beard and JC MacMaccon(sp) were fantastic on La Jolla.
That Damn Good Looking Aganger From Iowa
Say what you will, He was a better XO than the one that followed him. I was on the 677 from April 89 to June 93
ReplyDeleteTom Osbourne? Is he related to Ozzy?
ReplyDeleteCOMSUBPAC meets Mike Mulligan, now that would be a story!!
The folk tale that says you need to be a hammer as the XO is bunk. You need to be yourself and get the ship's work done. You cannot act your way into good performance. With XO/CO/above, WYSIWYG.
ReplyDeleteI know many who have served with "Big Mac", myself included. I can say there are complaints: but NO MORE SO than for any other demanding boss. For my $.02, he's a fine officer.
On the other topic...
ReplyDeleteSeven years in the submarine force and I never saw a submarine submerge from outside the pressure hull. Am I alone on this, or just that I never had the privilege of being a Squadron rider happily pulling away from the BSP with my sea-time letter firmly clenched in my tiny hand?

With you LT L, did a JO tour and was always in the people tank for the sinking. Although I did watch the crew get underway without me, a long story but a happy feeling.
ReplyDeleteOne could head to Dabob Bay catch it if they were well informed, but I also have heard that Dabob Bay trials might be a dying operation, I only did it twice during a Bangor tour.
BoiseBubba
The CO of 677 when COMSUBPAC was the XO told me in a special captain's mast (that I officially requested), "XXXX, either you're going to be the death of me, or I'm going to kill you first."
ReplyDeleteAll I have to say is "GO BIG RED!!!"
ReplyDeleteI've met Tom Osbourne... and he is a god among men.
I also was in NROTC at UNL... but that didn’t work out too well.
Very Respectfully
ELT1(SS)
I've seen the submergence on periviz, but never seen the boat go down with me still on the roof.
ReplyDeleteMust be talikng about BB at mast?????
ReplyDeleteBB is correct - & it was a mast that I requested after being shafted one too many times by BB & DM. I wanted a record of the events.
ReplyDeleteIs that Admiral a dwarf? He looks like he should be standing on a dashboard with his head bobbling.
ReplyDeleteRE: As I stated on previous posts, Skip Beard and JC MacMaccon(sp) were fantastic
ReplyDeleteSkip Beard was a pompous ass. To quote an old diesel boat skipper friend of mine, "He was a little bald headed prick when he was a Lt."
Hey submariners,
ReplyDeleteIs there a difference between a submarine "submerging" and "diving"? Or are the two terms interchangeable?
Was wondering. Thanks.

ReplyDeleteWhen used as a verb, same thing.

Good photographic evidence that the GEORGIA can submerge without taking a tug, helicopter, or barge-in-tow with them. Well done!
ReplyDelete"There goes the mail"
ReplyDeleteYou forgot the huge orange force protection buoy in San Diego, in broad daylight!
ReplyDeleteWasn't RDML (Sel) Wears onboard for that as the CSS19 deputy? Nice to dodge that bullet.
ReplyDeleteSupposedly, while OIC of the 635 in Charleston, McAneny irritated the Civ-gangers by demanding that they not wear ties with cartoon characters on them. I was glad to have missed him....
ReplyDeleteHe was my CO on the USS Philadelphia and yes he did have a napoleon complex. They use to call him Lord Far quad when he was Squadron 11.
ReplyDeleteWow, there is really much worthwhile info here!
ReplyDeleteI was on the Drum when he was XO and he was a little man man...but very sharp
ReplyDeleteI suppose one and all should browse on it.
