2011 Battle "E" Winners Announced

Here's the list of SUBPAC Battle "E" winners for 2011:

Commander Submarine Squadron (SUBRON) 1: USS Texas (SSN 775)
SUBRON 3: USS Olympia (SSN 717)
SUBDEVRON 5: USS Connecticut (SSN 22)
SUBRON 7: USS Santa Fe (SSN 763)
SUBRON 11: USS Hampton (SSN 767)
SUBRON 15: USS Buffalo (SSN 715)
SUBRON 17: USS Nebraska (SSBN 739) - Blue and Gold
SUBRON 19: USS Michigan (SSGN 727) - Gold
Submarine Tender: USS Frank Cable (AS 40)
Floating Dry Dock: Arco (ARDM 5)
Special Category: Devil Ray (TWR 6)

It looks like Hampton and both Nebraska crews are repeat submarine winners from last year, while Michigan kept the award on the boat, it just went to the other crew. (Frank Cable and Arco also won last year.) I'm glad to see my old boat Connecticut on the list, especially since DEVRON 5 didn't give out an "E" last year. The award for Texas comes only a few days after she returned from her initial WESTPAC.

I'll post the SUBLANT list as soon as I see it.

Update 1645 03 Jan: Here's the SUBLANT list:
SUBRON 2: USS Providence (SSN 719)
SUBRON 4: USS New Hampshire (SSN 778)
SUBRON 6: USS Newport News (SSN 750)
SUBDEVRON 12: USS Annapolis (SSN 760)
SUBRON 16: USS Florida (SSGN 728) - Blue and Gold
SUBRON 20: USS Alaska (SSBN 732) - Blue and Gold

  5. Taking nothing away from the boats who won, Battle "E" is more about being able to submit the proper admin for review for all the various requirements then it is about being Combat ready.

  6. Love seeing our old boat the Nebraska on this list! :)

    Don't be a hater.
Dena had a good deployment and year.

Santa Fe had an amazing deployment -period and a good year too.

    Submarines forever!!!

  11. Hawaii last year and Texas this year. Looks like Virgina Class has the upper hand over first flights.

  12. I'm a Santa Fe and Olympia sailor. Coincedence, I think not. I leave a trail of excellence everywhere I go. If an MTS was eligible for the Battle E, the 635 would be a lock!

    ReplyDelete
  13. The 626 would be much more likely than the 635. The 626 was an absolute beast going into DEMA.

  14. If routinely screwing up was a criteria....then yeah....635 would be a shoe-in ;)

  15. Buffalo won because they are a feel good story. They continually perform worse than the other two boats in SQD 15.

  16. how is the buffalo a feel good story?

  17. Because everyone wants to show that they fixed all of the problems they had in the past. They still suck.

  18. Santa Fe over Pasadena! Yes, SFE owned it!!!

  19. New and Sexy beats Old and reliable every time. You want awards, go to a newer boat.

Well, they are the Navy's only 4.0 tender. Too bad we are using a 5.0 scale now...

I feel like I'm in a time warp back to 1995. Some things never change.

BTW, is the photoshop of the 635's brow banner still floating around ("Last in its Class")?

  23. The Fulton....Any Idea on How Many "E"'s that Bucket won from say 1980 till they scrapped it?
Though it was a great ship from 1940 ish till 1960...State Pier would have washed away if it was not for the Fulton breaking wave action for it...AS11...
A ship that was more like the Queen Mary in Long Beach.........

  24. Hello? Did someone forget to tell SUBLANT it's after the first? How hard can it be to put together a ppt and brief sheet...

  28. Do you think one the spoken or unspoken criteria for selection is the winners must always include at least one boat from every type of vessel? SSBN, SSGN, three types SSN (Los Angeles, Seawolf & Virginia class) and a sub tender?

Is there ever a year where one type of boat has been skipped over?

Anyway congratulations to all that got the battle E.

  29. BZ to the NEWPORT NEWS! CSS6 Winner (CSS8 representing!)

  31. Actually, Michigan gold got it this year.

    ReplyDelete
  32. What? No best razor blade award. Hale (gold) got Battle E twice then sent to PSNS for salvaged.

    ReplyDelete
  33. The Texas? Come on... We used to cream the Texas when I was aboard the Arkansas...

Err... wait... that was a different class back then... :)

Actually, I am wondering... So far the Virginia, the Texas, and the Mississippi are coming around, but where is the Arkansas as an SSN?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Anon at 2:20. The reason for that is because css17 is all ssbn. Css19 is all ssgns, and so on.

    ReplyDelete
  35. CSDS-5 is all Seawolf class, and last year did not give out a 'Battle E'...

    ReplyDelete
  36. P.S. - this is the last Battle E for CSS-2 - they were disestablished on 29 December and the boats transferred to CSS-4 and CSDS-12. Lineup is now:

    CSS-4: MIAMI (755), SPRINGFIELD (761, HARTFORD (768), VIRGINIA (774), NEW HAMPSHIRE (778), NEW MEXICO (779), MISSOURI (780), and CALIFORNIA (781)

    CSDS-12: MEMPHIS (691), DALLAS (700), PROVIDENCE (719), PITTSBURGH (720), SAN JUAN (751), ALEXANDRIA (757), ANNAPOLIS (760), and TOLEDO (769)

    You're welcome.

  39. Lots of political crap here. Battle "E" is important, don't get me wrong, but what about all the other awards. I know for certain that CSS-1 Battle E winner, TEXAS, also got an Excellent on ORSE, the only one in CSS-1 and didn't get the Engineering E. The lower tier awards seem to just be for making sure everyoe gets a trophy. Kinda BS if you ask me.

    ReplyDelete
  40. OLY also won the Navigation N, Engineering E, and Supply E. Clean sweep. CSS-3 is also dissolving, so OLY also won the last CSS-3 awards.
