Call me a dumb ass, but how in the hell do we take a look at the stats as to who is winning? I tried to vote for this blog but I'm not certain my vote got through.

Will inauguration of women's submarine service hasten the end of extra pay for submarine duty?

Don't decide too fast.

Will Vaginus ever realize that plugging his lame blog here makes him look more like the douchebag we all know he is?

I think, if anything, the addition of women to subs will actually prolong the length of time that sub sailors continue to receive bonuses. Adding women to the mix is going to seriously mess up retention and recruitment in weird ways.

1) There's not many women out there that want to be submariners (in proportion to how many men want to be submariners), so recruiting them will be tougher. That, in itself, will probably not have much effect as long as there is only like 8 women a year...

2) Female retention in every other part of the Navy is TERRIBLE. Submarine retention is already pretty bad, so there's no reasonably reason to think that female submariner retention will not also be TERRIBLE if not WORSE.

Assuming the Navy wants to retain some women to show how super-diverse they are requires the continued payment of bonuses to men and women (unless they want a lot of blowback by singling out women for special bonuses).

The one thing that might kill bonuses is defense spending cuts that cause us to back off on our submarine end strength numbers and downsize. Which has somewhere above zero odds, given the current political climate.
