Additionally, I'm hearing that, in support of the efforts of the city of Topeka to win the Google broadband network, the Navy will be changing the name of my old boat to USS Google (SSN 754).

Today the Navy announced a new and unprecedented partnership with the U.S. Air Force on the next Aircraft Carrier. The next Ford class aircraft carrier will be jointly crewed by both Navy and Air Force personnel becoming the first fully joint warship. In the spirit of this partnership the ship will be named the "James Doolittle" after Lt Col. James Doolittle that famously led a raid on Tokyo in April 1942. In the spirit of environmental efforts in the Navy, the ship will include a new 'Green Flight Deck' designed to Air Force specifications. Naval aviators have never been so excited about an upcoming deployment.They even have a picture:

Actually, Walker Lake could be a good place for NR-1 to end up! Imagine venturing into the depth of a 90-foot deep lake to take part in the submarine experience. How exciting would that be.

ReplyDeleteWith the posters on this site talking endlessly about every minor submarine-related story, how did you guys miss the launch of an entire new class of ship? I read all the time and I've never once seen a mention of the LNP-FAS class. You guys got scooped by someone who admits he knows nothing about subs!
So what kind of naming convention do these "little nuclear-powered Fast Attack subs" use? I figure Tridents are big => named after states. LAs are smaller => named after cities. LNP-FAS much smaller => named after buildings. And since they're stationed out of Nevada, the first ship of the class is probably the USS Circus-Circus.
And no nukes in the crew! No propulsion! No nukes!

I actually read that the second ship of the LNP-FAS class is going to be named the USS Grand Sierra (LNPFAS-2). The estimated cost is $150M for this ship.
ReplyDeleteAlso note that the Driving (Golf) Range next to the Grand Sierra will be converted to allow refueling and drydocking of LNP-FAS-class ships.
Watch out for that water hazard.
