Update 12 Jan 0411: Added links to the official Navy stories.
Maine is SSBN 741. Nebraska is SSBN 739. I think there's a typo somewhere. Also, rot in hell Nebraska.

DeleteBack when 688s were new and experiencing diesel problems, one of the S-girls won the CSS-7 Battle E. It was a huge embarrassment for the single-shaft guys, but two screws are better than one.
ReplyDeleteCorrected the "typo" on Nebraska's hull number. (Actually, I had copied the HTML code from last year's post and updated for this year, and forgot to update the hull number from Maine winning last year.)

ReplyDeleteThat was Skate (SSN578). And to add insult to injury, right after that our NI's crapped out (cable degradation after decades of use) and we ended up being welded to the pier for 3 months or so.
Way to go Dallas!
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't be so sure about the Dallas decom date. I heard she might be around for awhile.
ReplyDelete@KellyJ: Chief Pops didn't mind being welded to the pier, since it beat the hell out of having to deploy the STASS while on the surface.
ReplyDeleteglad they didnt give the E to those that had to get pulled off station/deployment this time

ReplyDeleteFloating drydocks get "Battle" awards?
Everybody does get a prize these days.
Go Big Red!!!
ReplyDeleteAgreeing with above comment, Dallas might be around for a while longer.
ReplyDeleteDAL may be around for a while longer, but won't be a submarine anymore when her hull certification expires. Driving a submarine on the surface all the time is pretty nasty and uncomfortable, especially out of Groton.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see what the Dallas TX plan is for transporting the inactivated hull to their city - no deep rivers or barge routes.
Well, they say they've completed an engineering feasibility study satisfactorily. Am just guessing, but the solution (along with some cutting torches) just might look a whole lot like this.
ReplyDeleteWell done to all- particularly pleased about the Dallas.
ReplyDeleteSurprised you haven't mentioned Major Command selections yet. Seems to have slipped under the radar this year.
Congratulations all- particularly pleased about Dallas.

I am on Dallas... We are proud... We also received the Nav N... And yes she will be around longer. We are hitting the dry dock in Groton for a modernization and god only knows what after that. They'll moor her next to old ironsides before the Navy is finished with het.
ReplyDeleteRIP ADM Kinnard McKee (NAVSEA 08). I was interviewed by him a month after Rickover was not extended (retired), and later for Engineer.
