Battle "E" Time!

It's that time of year where SUBLANT and SUBPAC send out their "010001Z JAN" messages with the winners of the previous year's Battle Efficiency competition; here are the 2013 results:

First, SUBPAC:

Commander, Submarine Squadron 1 (Pearl Harbor) - USS Greeneville (SSN 772)
SUBDEVRON 5 (Bangor, Wash.) - USS Jimmy Carter (SSN 23)
SUBRON 7 (Pearl Harbor) - USS Cheyenne (SSN 773)
SUBRON 11 (San Diego) - USS Albuquerque (SSN 706)
SUBRON 15 (Guam) - USS Chicago (SSN 721)
SUBRON 17 (Bangor) - USS Nebraska (SSBN 741 739) (Blue and Gold)
SUBRON 19 (Bangor) - USS Ohio (SSGN 726) (Blue)
Submarine Tender USS Emory S. Land (AS 39)
Special Category was awarded to floating dry dock Arco (ADRM-5), Undersea Rescue Command, and the torpedo weapons retriever Devil Ray (TWR 6), all in San Diego.

Next, SUBLANT:

SUBRON 4 (Groton) - USS Missouri (SSN 780)
SUBRON 6 (Norfolk) - USS Norfolk (SSN 714)
SUBDESRON 12 (Groton) - USS Dallas (SSN 700)
SUBRON 16 (Kings Bay) - USS Georgia (SSGN 729) (Blue and Gold)
SUBRON 20 (Kings Bay) - USS Wyoming (SSBN 742) (Blue and Gold)

USS Georgia is the only repeat winner in the Atlantic, while my old boat USS Jimmy Carter joined Ohio (Blue), Emory S. Land, and Arco as repeat winners in the Pac. I was especially happy to see Dallas win as a last hurrah before her decomm. I was also happy to see that my successors as Eng on USS Connecticut (SSN 22) won the Engineering Red "E" for SUBDEVRON 5.

As always, BZ to all the winners!

  1. Maine is SSBN 741. Nebraska is SSBN 739. I think there's a typo somewhere. Also, rot in hell Nebraska.

  2. Back when 688s were new and experiencing diesel problems, one of the S-girls won the CSS-7 Battle E. It was a huge embarrassment for the single-shaft guys, but two screws are better than one.

  3. Corrected the "typo" on Nebraska's hull number. (Actually, I had copied the HTML code from last year's post and updated for this year, and forgot to update the hull number from Maine winning last year.)

That was Skate (SSN578). And to add insult to injury, right after that our NI's crapped out (cable degradation after decades of use) and we ended up being welded to the pier for 3 months or so.

  5. Way to go Dallas!

  6. I wouldn't be so sure about the Dallas decom date. I heard she might be around for awhile.

  7. @KellyJ: Chief Pops didn't mind being welded to the pier, since it beat the hell out of having to deploy the STASS while on the surface.

  8. glad they didnt give the E to those that had to get pulled off station/deployment this time

  9. Floating drydocks get "Battle" awards?

Everybody does get a prize these days.

  11. DAL may be around for a while longer, but won't be a submarine anymore when her hull certification expires. Driving a submarine on the surface all the time is pretty nasty and uncomfortable, especially out of Groton.

I'd like to see what the Dallas TX plan is for transporting the inactivated hull to their city - no deep rivers or barge routes.

  12. Well, they say they've completed an engineering feasibility study satisfactorily. Am just guessing, but the solution (along with some cutting torches) just might look a whole lot like this.

  13. Well done to all- particularly pleased about the Dallas.

Surprised you haven't mentioned Major Command selections yet. Seems to have slipped under the radar this year.

  15. I am on Dallas... We are proud... We also received the Nav N... And yes she will be around longer. We are hitting the dry dock in Groton for a modernization and god only knows what after that. They'll moor her next to old ironsides before the Navy is finished with het.

  16. RIP ADM Kinnard McKee (NAVSEA 08). I was interviewed by him a month after Rickover was not extended (retired), and later for Engineer.
