USS Boise Crew On Namesake City Visit

The Commanding Officer of USS Boise (SSN 764) and three crewmembers are in town for a namesake city visit today through Saturday. I was able to meet them at a Rotary Club meeting, and snapped this picture of three of them:

I hope they enjoy their time in Boise, and that the people with whom they interact better understand the sacrifices these men make. For my readers -- did you ever get to be the CO's "liberty buddy"?

Ask the LTjg that accompanied the former CO of the USS Chicago on their ill-fated visit to the NROTC Unit at Cornell.

As a young LT I got to both spend a couple of days with my CO visiting a NROTC unit (he was an alumnus, and I was transferring there a few months later)

Took us a while but we found a "gentleman's establishment"

I'll leave it at that...

I have been on a namesake visit and it was a fantastic time! A little surprised they picked a nub to go. It is such a great deal. We would take SOY/JSOY usually with COB & CO (space depending). Maybe the young FT was their BJOY...

Re: Spice for sale at the 711...most were very junior Sailors from what I heard that were caught once one guy was caught and then the confessions started and the ring just kept getting bigger. Command sweep popped a few for coke.

Would like to hear more about KY. I had heard of the relief but not the details.

You guys must have lived in a different submarine world than me. That never happened in my 4+ years on the 690. Lucky if the CO was even cordial enough to talk to you let alone go anywhere with you.

And O-7 and up - we never saw them boys.

They just worked the shit out of us and left out and good deals

"Liberty partner", no. With my first CO and the rest of the crew the first night the boat pulled into PI at Slim's for the free beer then up to Island Girls, yes.

Seeing him on some days after tells me I would have been hard pressed to even TRY to keep up.

As a matter of fact I got to visit Boise with my CO, XO, and SOY. We were all part of the Commissioning Crew. Had a great visit, great host, Mayor Dirk Kempthorne http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirk_Kempthornehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirk_Kempthorne Got presented the Key to the City on the 50 yd line at a Boise State game. While I was on BOISE we sent the SOY every year for a visit.

After a floor show at Tom Tom's in Olongapo (in which the CO got a good face sitting and blow job), the CO asked me to get him back to the main gate. We hit a couple of more bars on Magsaysay on the way back.

He was a little worried he wife would find out. But in those days (80's) what happened on WESTPAC stayed there.

Got him to the gate and he said "thanks QM3 for the escort and have fun!"

For all the substantive comments on this blog, there are really too many ridiculous and ignorant ones. The YN in the picture happens to be a rising star on the crew. And if you look closely, you'll note his "chest candy" includes the following:

- Battle 'E' [led to battenburg cup]
- Expeditionary Medal [can't tell you about that one]
- National Defense [service during two wars]
- GWOT service
- Sea Service
- Arctic Expeditionary
- Expert Pistol
- Expert Rifle

None of these awards are individual citations (besides the marksmanship ones), all are representative of several years service on an amazing crew of a ship that has done incredible things.

I forgot about the Submarine Warfare Device and Diver Qualification pin he wears. Both of which he earned.

On the Bremerton, me and a A-gang MM1 and the CO went fishing for Coho salmon while inport at Esquimalt, BC on an ex-Canadian Naval tug with what had to be the Old Man of the sea as owner of the boat.

Later that evening the CO ordered the MS to cook our salmon. So while everyone else was eating 3X5 fish planks, we were eating fresh salmon on a bed of rice.

BOISE has a long history of great relationships with her namesake city. There's a picture (I saw while on the boat) of nearly the entire crew standing under the bow in dry dock wearing orange & blue Boise State Bronco ball caps.

While I was on Boise I got to do two namesake visits there, both of which also included a trip to the NROTC unit in Moscow, ID (my alma mater). Both times we met up with then Governor Dirk Kempthorne who's always been very keen on the ship since he was Mayor of Boise when she was commissioned. He probably still wears his ship's belt buckle.

Another good story about the Honorable Mr. Kempthorne; he came to Norfolk & spent some time with the crew & the wardroom. Of course one of the JO's was given the obligatory duty of being his official escort to help him get around the base more easily & in the course of his duties had the Gov's cell # & built a pleasant rapport. So sometime later when that JO & one other on the boat flew into Boise to drive up to Sun Valley for a ski trip they called the # expecting a secretary or voicemail but instead reached the Gov. himself who apparently was quite happy to hear from them and referred them to someone who was more than happy to take a couple submariners from the BOISE to a BSU game.

Dirk Kempthorne is a class act, loved by his state & those he serves. He's a guy I wish would run for president.

So where do they get a chance to shoot for expert rifle -- yeoman school? At boot camp they only shoot the M9 pistol and the shotgun.

No NAM, no NUC/MUC, no other "candy" as you put it. Some of us had more before our first YEAR on the boat ended. All depends on what you don't do, where you don't go, what you don't see.

Oh, and I qual'd .45 and M-16 and shot for medals because our TM2 MADE the time for us to go up to the range up by Schofield Barracks. IOW, he did far more than the minimum required.

A JUNIOR IN HIGH SCHOOL WHO HAD SEX WITH AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENT!!! He needs to be on a sexual preditor list.
And how long did he masterbate and think about having sex with boys? In boot camp? Into his flight training?
He is aroused by she-males. His wife looks like somebody special. It's kind of like Mr. Slave::He has a "signature" look of a S&M masochist. Similarly, his wife has a "signature" look.

Just Saying......you are a first class DB! What's wrong with YN's having awards? Didn't you do anything special or did you ride the vents when you were in? I'm sure YN2 will trade you some sea time for a $.89 ribon. BTW this might piss you off but I recieved 2Navy Commendations and 6 NAM's as an FT1.

Chest candy, yup. Sometimes YN's go places and do stuff. Sometimes there's a ribbon or award comes along as a result.

Don't knock it until you try it.

Former deck ape on a tin can and first loader 3"-50 gun. Boat Coxn, driver and rifleman in Viet Nam, courier in Viet Nam. Then came to the submarine service and rode a couple of attack boats. Neither I nor my nubs were passengers; we were watchstanders just like the rest of you. It's better to be a member of the crew than that card playin' dude who just eats and sleeps.

The CO and crew enjoyed a great trip to visit the ship's namesake city. A big part of their trip was watching the AFA game on the Blue.
While at the game the whole group was featured on KTVB's True Blue pre-game show. Check it out here:

USS Boise Crew visit Bronco Stadium

The three sailors who accompanied the CO are recent SOQ, SOY or BJOQ honorees. These sailors are true professionals and honored the crew they represented as ambassadors to the ship's namesake city. I would welcome any of them to my division and expect nothing but superior performance from all of them (yes, even the YN.)

I'm happy to say they met many people (like Joel) in Boise who thanked them for all the work they do for all Americans so well. As Joel posted back in July, this crew won 2010 honors as the best ship in the Atlantic Fleet when they were presented the Battenberg Cup. A far cry from the days when we were struggling to avoid doing another safety stand-down when I was aboard in '05-'06.

The CO, XO, COB and crew deserve a huge BZ for all they've done to make USS BOISE a boat to be proud of, no matter where you are from-except maybe Oklahoma... they'll never be proud of anything so closely tied to BSU.

If you are in the Boise area, KTVB should be airing a story soon on the connection BOISE has with BSU. It features a video tour with the CO of the sights inside the ship that make her the furthest-travelled member of Bronco Nation.

Concur 100% that Governor Kempthorne has always gone above and beyond to support the USS Boise. Spent a wonderful evening he hosted for several former BOISE CO's, a few current crewmen (ship was at sea) and members of the Boise Committee aboard the USS Sequoia in DC for the Virgina Tech game last year. He and his wife were great hosts and made the former Presidential yacht a truly memorable visit on many levels.

As COB Saunders liked to say every day, "HOO-YAH BOISE!"
