I was attached to a boat for 12 Christmas' and underway for 8 of them. My wish for those who are deployed in any capacity, whatever their branch of service, is that they try to ignore their circumstances and just enjoy the company you are with. After you leave service, you will never be with people you can trust and depend on in that way.

In a similar vein to Amazon's users' review of "How To Avoid Huge Ships",
NOVA made a documentary film "Why Ships Sink" (available on Netflix when last I checked). Or, check out the Duh quoitient in the IMDB review entitled "Cruise control" not the way to go in the cruise industry"

Ahh Christmas lights. 26 Y/O boot chief on a Norfolk 688, the COB sends me on a mission to find some lights. I end up in some o5 Chop office, and he proceeds to ream me up and fucking down about misuse of government funds for something as bs as lights. I took the full force gale, and as I opened my deck jacket to get something out, he saw my collar anchor and went pale. "I'm sorry Chief, I thought you were an ensign". Much laughter. And we got some lights.

I was single on a 637. We had deployed to Westpac with a scheduled "before Xmas" return.
As luck would have it we were extended for a week.
Morale sank amongst all engaged.
