I Finally Gave In

I finally succumbed to all the peer pressure and signed up for a Facebook account; my profile is here. Anyone who wants to be my friend is more than welcome to add me. (Yes, I admit it... I'm bored sitting here at home during the last few weeks of radiation and chemo. I'm going back to work at the beginning of next year, but until then it's pretty much just me getting on my wife's nerves as I mess around with her normal routine by being home constantly. She asked last night when I was going out to sea next.)

You must really be getting on her nerves if she wants you to go back to sea!
Best wishes for the Christmas season, and get well soon.

Joel, kill some time at Baen Publishing. All of their books have at least the first five chapters up for free, and you can do webscription for a pittance:

You being a military guy, and a bubblehead, I suggest you try John Ringos Vorpal Blade...an artifact is found, installed on an Ohio, and the boat is turned into a starship. Good story, lots of fun, Space Marines, Machinists Mates, lots of shootin' and killin'.

I know what this is like. I had quadruple bypass surgery 5 years ago, and was off work for over ten weeks. It got so bad, I started watching all the crappy daytime courtroom shows just to kill some time. I knew every station's daytime schedule by heart. Pretty pathetic, but you have to kill time somehow!

OH-NOES! Not the facebook... thems some truly Desperate measures, Bubble. OTOH, a nephew's classmate also undergoing chemo uses it quite effectively to talk about her hospital and treatment status, get warm wishes from friends. The rec from them was it lets her not feel like her life is dominated by the treatment -- she's not bringing dozens of well-wishers up to speed repeatedly talking about where that part of her life is.

As for Baen, nothing says fun like finishing chapter 5 and not being able to track down chaps 6-nnn. Seriously, Baen does good with their efforts to embrace 21st century technologies in their publishing. Guess one could just resort to abebooks.com for anything not carried locally.

Here's wishing you happy holidays and a prosperous and (not at all meaning to be trite) a healthy new year.

I've been reading your blog for a couple of years now. Really enjoy it. Your post on the "tattoos" got to me. I have three(prostate cancer detected early), black ink dots, midline front, thigh left, thigh right..... this after 30 years of Navy with none. I was the COB on the Topeka during part of your tour. The Corpsman relieved me and I went to SubBase. I would enjoy swapping stories with you about the cancer treatment...and the Navy career if you are willing. Can you get me email from this post?
