Bubblehead's "Best Of The Naughties"
Well, it's December, so the decade is almost over. It's time for my list of the top efforts in some pop culture categories I care about for the last 10 years. In these categories, I felt there were really three entries that really stood head-and-shoulders above the others, so that's why these are "Top 3" lists. With little further ado, here they are:
Best Songs Of The Naughties
1) "Beautiful Day", U2
2) "Hey Ya", Outkast
3) "Vertigo", U2
OK, so I like U2. Honorable mention goes to "Viva La Vida" by Coldplay and (yes, I'm serious) "Hot N Cold" by Katy Perry. Overall, I thought the Naughties weren't quite as good as the 90s as far as music goes; I'd rank "Semi-Charmed Life" and "Mr. Jones" as better than any of the songs listed above.
Best Movies Of The Naughties
1) "Serenity" - Simply put, the best Sci-Fi movie ever.
2) "The Dark Knight" - Heath Ledger gave the performance of the decade
3) "Casino Royale" - A great "reset" for a beloved franchise
Honorable mention to "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" and "No Country For Old Men". I thought the best movies of the last 10 years were better than the decade previous. Dishonorable mention goes to "Atonement" as the worst movie of the decade. I still can't believe how much it sucked!
Best College Football Games Of The Naughties
1) 2003 Fiesta Bowl: Ohio State 31, Miami 24
2) 2006 Rose Bowl: Texas 41, USC 38
3) 2007 Fiesta Bowl: Boise State 43, Oklahoma 42
I rank college football games based on how well-played they are, how important they are, and how entertaining they are, in that order. Lots of locals might think that the game I ranked #3 should top the list, but let's face it -- it wasn't that well played (lots of turnovers and penalties) and it wasn't for the national championship; only one team really had anything to play for. Still, it was the most entertaining of the three.
What do you think? Any additions or subtractions? And do you have any "Best of the decade made up of years starting with the numbers 200_" lists that you'd like to add?

Baseball team of the decade: New York Yankees.

I've always been a Seattle Mariners fan....even after Lou took his departure....and their 116 (Regular season) wins in 2001 sealed the deal in my eyes as Best Baseball Team (even though they've sucked ever since!).
TV Shows? 24, NCIS, Criminal Minds.
Best Movies: Casino Royale, Pursuit of Happyness, Law-Abiding Citizen.
Worst Movie: Syriana

Best TV shows:

Deadwood, Sopranos and Two and a Half Men are favorite TV shows. Sopranos may have been the best TV of the decade period.
Lots of good and bad movies out there. Another vote for 'No Country for Old Men' for best. Also 'The Departed'
No clear winner for best baseball of the decade. Maybe the Yankees. It certainly wasn't Seattle. Worst was probably Pittsburgh.
Best NFL team was probably the Patriots. Worst was Detroit.

Favorite movie of SSN crews, by overwhelming consensus-Brokeback Mountain.

I liked your list, especially since you put Serenity on top of the movies. It really was a great flick. I also agree with you about the music. Way better in the '90s!

Would probably reverse the order on your top two football games. Both featured the two most celebrated teams of the decade (Miami, USC) and loaded with transcendent talent across the field, but the Ohio State game is always going to be marred for me by that bogus pass interference call that gave the game to the Buckeyes.
Boise State-Oklahoma was kind of sloppy, and Oklahoma didn't start playing until the second half -- but it scores major points for the series of jaw-dropping "I can't believe that just happened" plays in the 4th quarter - coupled with the special feeling I got as an east coaster working in the Navy Yard that I was one of the few people at work who'd stayed up to watch it.

I would include Navy beating Notre Dame in 2007.

I hate to be priggish but the decade will not be over for another year. There was no year zero.

Ericn1300,
You must be a holdover from the Y2K anal argument about the year 2000 not marking the beginning of the new century.
"There was no year zero."? Sure ther was. It was 2000. Lots of zeros there. One decade = 10 years:
2000
2001
2002
2003
2004
2005
2006
2007
2008
2009
I used up all 8 fingers and both thumbs counting from 2000-2009. On 1/1/2010, ten years (one decade) will have passed since 1/1/2000. This decade is onve on 1/1/2010.
12/10/2009 2:45 PM
Sure, the decade will be over; a decade is a period of 10 years. 1995 through 2004 is a decade. I didn't say "the first decade of the 21st century" was ending; I said the Naughties are ending. In this case, I'm defining a "decade" as "the collection of years starting with the numbers 200". Unless, of course, you think that 1990 was part of the 80s.

Just chanced upon this site last week. Good stuff. Not much into pop culture, especially what passes for music these days. Gran Torino was great. I like NCIS. Check out a group called MOLOKO on YouTube; not MTV-type videos, but live stuff from 2000-20004, especially 2004 Pink Pop festival.

NEW YORK – The top album of the decade came from an act that's not even around anymore — 'N Sync.
Billboard magazine says the boy band led by Justin Timberlake had the decade's best-selling album with "No Strings Attached," which sold more than 10 million copies.
The most popular song of the decade was Mariah Carey's ballad "We Belong Together."
Eminem was named the top artist of the decade, while Nickelback was named top group.
For 2009, Taylor Swift had the best-selling album with "Fearless," while the Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow" was top song.
Billboard released those chart-toppers plus others for the decade and 2009 on its Web site on Friday.

You might be watching too much Serenity/Firefly if:
1. While driving you avoid large ugly trucks because you fear Reevers.
2. Your cell phone plays the "Ballad of Serenity."
3. When Kaylee and Wash talk about the internal workings of Serenity you understand what
they are saying.
4. You know the difference between a companion and a whore.
5. On several occasions you've been awakened in a cold sweat by nightmarish visions of the battle of Serenity Valley.
6. One day you'd like to clear atmo just to see what the rest of the verse is like.
7. The last time you were kissed by a beautiful woman you paused to see if you'd pass out.
8. You always cut your apples before eating them.
9. You realize that the love affair between Jayne and Vera may be strange, but could not possibly be lesbian.
10. You've begun to curse in goram Chinese.

What a coincidence!
Col. Michael Mulligan will head the prosecution of Maj. Nidal Hasan.
Mike

Seems the excitement over "Mike Mulligan" has reached a testosterone overload on these boards. Those who share an erection for Mike should come out of the proverbial closet and let their man love feeling be known. "Men on Mike" does make a lovely sounding Sub story.
