Submariners At Play
Over on YouTube, it looks like someone from USS Hampton (SSN 767) posted a fun music video of the crew interacting in normal submariner ways during a recent deployment:
How do you know it's from a deployment? Check out their facial hair in some of the shots. In any event , it's a lot of fun, and I really hope the act of me posting it doesn't make it disappear like another funny submarine video I stumbled across recently.
Update 1349 10 October: Updated links to video.

A lot of things pop out in that video that remind me of deployments 25 years ago.
1. I thought I recognized most of the crew. Doubtfull since we are all in are mid to late 40's, but it's funny how every boat has a guy that looks like this from the mid-west and a guy from the city that looks like this.
2. If you notice in the shack shots that guys are still taking retail bought high end over the ear headsets and cutting off the 1/4 plugs to wire up to whatever they use now. We bought really nice headphones in the Yokuska A-33 building and wired them up to AN/BQQ-5 console plugs. The Navy issue plastic headphones hurt and the had a freq resp of of a $10 dollar headset.
3. Did anyone notice the Korean "Mink" blanket on one of the bunks. Damn I wish I still had one of those. I may go online and look for an importer.

Actually the ST's don't have to cut the plugs off of the headsets to solder on the big AN/WIC style plug anymore. The Q-10 uses 1/4" stereo plugs, finally something came along that makes sense.
Interesting the camera never caught anyone doing anything that remotely resembled work, and it would appear a lot of the filming took place during field day, or clean up ship. Hmmm...I wonder if the COB has seen this?
Had to be a boat on deployment, not only the beards, but these days you'd never see a boat with guitars onboard and all of the other shenanigans during PDT or IDTC or whatever they call it now.
The two guys wrestling on the crew's mess with a khaki belt clearly visible in the background, and whatever is going on with the guy with the yellow shirt in middle level crew's head, are both recipes for disaster. Some might consider the command climate that fosters such behavior in a negative light, reminiscent of the Columbus and Helena hazing incidents.
It will be interesting to see how the mid-deployment parent squadron inspections affects the "on deployment" attitude. Of course, even those could just turn into a boondoggle for the commodore and/or deputy to visit foreign ports.
