Another Sig On The Great Qual Card Of Life

Our youngest child turns 18 today, so I guess I get a sign-off on the "get all your kids safely to adulthood" signature on Life's Qual Card. Sean is the only one of our children I didn't get to see born; I first saw him through the periscope when he was about 3 weeks old. Since then, he's kept me entranced as I've seen him grow; he's everything I wasn't growing up (confident, popular, good-looking, tall, imbued with common sense) along with having my good points (smarts). As he continues to grow in adulthood, I can only hope he knows how proud I am of him.

Happy Birthday, Sean.

Joel, I think you may have left your humility in your other shirt.

Your kid may have gotten your "smarts", but touting yourself like that in an open forum makes you look like an egotistical douche.

Not touting too much if he admits the only thing he has going for him is smarts. Seems like you left your guts in your "other shirt" too, Mr. Anon.

I see a proud dad, not an egotistical douche.

Obviously, Mr. anon doesn’t have a grown child or anything else really important in his life. I find it refreshing when a man who is a Dad and a husband can express his pride in his child as you have here. I think that the lad is lucky that you fit into the quarter of American families that have both parents that are still married. An excellent example set for us all.

Been lurking on your blog for over a year now, Joel, but Mr. Anonymous brought me out of lurkdom to say congratulations, and I didn't detect a hint of egotism in your post. Well done.

Joel:

Watch Officer duty completed SAT! And BZ for that.....Proud for both you and Laurie.

Now, Station the Senior Supervisory Watch! Much more can go wrong after the 18th birthday.

Schedule lessons on ORM. Make sure you have training goals that are both achievable and measurable. Document all training and walkthroughs and assessments in, at minimum 40 pages, and then PRAY!

Seriously, Contrats to the entire Kennedy family on this huge milestone.

Wow... congrats Joel! I have 1 of 5 left at home.. almost there!

Anon@1531 - Joel *is* smart, damned smart. I don't know him personally, you see, but I know him. He is my brother submariner. As a nuclear officer, he had to be way past 'smart' or he wouldn't have even ever seen the inside of a submarine. Humility has nothing to do with it, not surviving the Navy, and not raising kids. Besides, it's *his* blog. If he wants to say he is smart, but not confident, popular, good-looking, tall, or imbued with a great deal of common sense... well, that just doesn't really sound egotistical to me. Who is really the douch here? Give ya a hint: It isn't Joel Kennedy.

Calling yourself smart is egotistical, plain and simple. I understand that inflated ego and self-praise are standard fare for some members of the O-Gang, and I make every effort, on and off the boat, to call them on that whenever I have the opportunity. Obviously, not a wise move if you intend to stay in.

MT2, are you honestly saying that you have to be smart to see the inside of a submarine? Take the average submarine crew and you will find some very smart people, but you will also find at least a few retards, both in and out of the wardroom.

Congratulations, Joel; I know just how you feel. My wife and I have shepherded my second and youngest child out of the house last year. My eldest graduated from William & Mary last June and her husband will graduate from Old Dominion in December. I am immensly proud of both my children and my son-in-law for all they've accomplished.

And it wasn't egotistical. I'm sure that Anon was wrapping up a "bad day" and was just grumbling.

Joel, "...along with having my good points"

You may certainly add having family priorities in sound shape to your good points.

Hearty congrats!

Thanks Dad. You're a great father (and blogger), a role model throughout my life, and still what I want to be when I grow up. :)

Keep it 1337.
