A Submarine Video And One Other Item

Here's a submarine video from YouTube -- it has some of my old Topeka shipmates, since part of it was clearly lifted from "Sharks of Steel":

Also, there's absolutely no confirmation that this guy is this guy. (I've been getting a few E-mails about the first linked story, and note that despite the same retirement year and same middle initial, there's no proof that the guy who pled guilty in the first story is actually the former USS Maine CO, SUBRON 20 Commander, and CSG 10 CoS.)

"No proof?"

From the first link (December 08, 2011):
In 2006, Lindstrom retired as a Captain in the U.S. Navy after 29 years of service. He then served as an Executive Vice-President of Nuclear Fuels Service in Erwin, Tenn., as Director of Nuclear Operations until November 2010.

From the second link (Sept 6, 2006):
Soon, though, Lindstrom will be taking on a civilian career as executive vice president of operations for Nuclear Fuel Services in Irwin, Tenn. He'll start his job Oct. 1 and relocate at that time.

How much more proof do you need?

"How much more proof do you need?"

There are considerations in blogging on Google that require the utmost care in avoiding defamation. While a guilty plea certainly tends to provide undisputed guilt, Lindstrom waived his right to indictment and entered a written plea agreement to an information.

An 'Alford plea'(also called a 'Kennedy plea') is a guilty plea in criminal court, where the defendant does not admit the act and asserts innocence. Wow, trial lawyers are good, aren't they?

Was Lindstrom's an Alford plea? Did the newspaper confuse one Lindstrom with his twin (if he has one)? Caution is prudent.

When the culprit is a an attorney, one has to be even more careful not to accuse anyone in particular.

Game over. Still subject to the UCMJ, so lets drop the hammer on this sicko.

Also, time to go back during his career and look for other child porn (or worse) clues at other duty stations. Obviously, he just didn't wake up after retirement and decide to start this new "hobby".

Ah, yes...the officially approved (as in ignored) submariner's love of porn.

It's all fun and games -- til someone pokes an eye out.

Matthew 5:32 makes reference to the depravity of "porneiac." We all just might want to reflect on that a bit this Sunday.

And to quote something even a submariner can understand, Animal House, "Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son."

Porn definitely falls in the 'stupid' category. 'Nuff said.

Remember when you were proud to be a submariner? Did it stop right about the time that you realized that the official culture was...

- all about fucking LBFMs or equivalents (as though they weren't someone's beloved daughter),

- actively condoned adultery by way of real-world behavior, not UCMJ clauses (as though that didn't bring a searing pain to every affected family member's broken heart),

- presumed that the highlight of your day was likely while rigged for red and surrounded by CRES,

- or promoted by way of inaction the reading porn that clearly poisons hearts & minds?

I'm headed to church in about 15 minutes. Hope to see you there.

The culture of submariners is a curable disease...but only if you can honestly see it for what it truly is.

Was he looking at 11 year olds or 17 year olds? They are equally illegal in the US, but only one is what I would call "sick".

Because I don't remember carding the ladies overseas. Or at prototype.

messing around with 17 yo when you were an 18-19yo at prototype is way dfifferent then messing around with 17yo when you are 56yo.

Both illegal, but a cop will look the other way for the first... unless it was his daughter, then you are likely to end up married to her... at least in SC...but it makes for awkward family reunions.

Fairly stupid question, you have to admit. With 18 y-o nude/porn pics being completely legal in the U.S., he made the effort to find 7,000 pics of 17 y-o jailbait? Why...because he hated being out of jail so much?

Stupid is as stupid does. And yes, there is plenty of that in the submarine force.

Tim was a good friend during the time of his service and will continue to be a good friend, even after what may have happened. When things like this happen or are discovered, we tend to isolate and scapegoat the perpetrator. I hope our community will rise above this... it is certainly within us to do so.

"Demons" as anthropomorphic satanic creatures are a little hard for people with modern sensibilities to take very seriously, but the term is a perfect metaphor for the things that grab hold of many of us, infect our hearts, and won't let go. Child pornography is just one of these. Alcoholism, drug dependence, depression, violent behavior... many of us are just as enslaved by these as Tim seems to have been with his particular demon.

So, I pray for healing... for Tim, for his family, for the child-victims of this trade, for the parents and guardians who made these materials or looked the other way, for those took the pictures and shot the videos, for those who collected them and made them available, for those who suffer from this particular sickness or from ones that are every bit as destructive; that we all may be made whole and reconciled someday. And I pray for forbearance in our submarine community; that we may be quick to support our shipmate and slow to judge him.

Tim's friend,

Would Tim have been so understanding if a Petty Officer had come before him at Captain's Mast for the same crime or would he have "risen above"?

It's worth reflecting on the fact that the Chinese government -- officially atheist -- bans porn.

So they're not doing it out of any sort of judgmental sense of holier-than-thou, Puritanical religion. They ban it for one simple reason: it fucks up people's heads, is bad for society, and is generally found in the background scene of every major sex crime.

If 'it' -- whatever it is -- fucks with your head, y'might just want to leave that shit alone.

Word to the wise...and the stupid.

Do not lump depression in with vices like kiddie porn, alcoholism, drug addiction or wife beating. Major depression is a medical condition caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. The person did not cause major depression himself
by bad behavior any more than a person born with a cleft palate caused it by misbehaving. You sick fuck. Do not compare your evil pervert friend with those who suffer from an incurable medical condition.

WHILE the ego-driven reactions here are understandable, this isn't really a (successful) forum for either condemning the former submarine O-6 or supporting him.

According to the news articles, the dude is pretty much self-screwed -- including admission of guilt -- and facing 5 yrs minimum to 20 yrs maximum in prison. Not a single thing said here, either way, is going to change that process or outcome in the slightest way whatsoever. So he's in the rear-view mirror already. The real question, for submariners, is what's to be done with the man in the mirror...ourselves.

Great quote from Leadership Secrets of Attila the Hun:

"All Huns serve a purpose...if only as an example of what not to become."

Rather than spouting the management principle du jour, today's submarine leadership would do well to learn from this woebegone life, come to OWN it as their own, take a good hard look at submarine culture and then make some serious changes.

From Bruce Almighty:

God: No matter how filthy something gets, you can always clean it right up.

Lindstrom's actions are indefensible, and one would have to be naïve to the point of being obtuse to believe that his real-world misbehavior began and ended with kiddie porn. It's too bad if that's all the evidence that the Feds have against him, as this is otherwise going to end up looking like an Al Capone-like prosecution for tax fraud. There's DAMN sure a lot more to the story, and it can't be good.

Similarly, you'd have to be a bit of a dim-bulb to not see or know that the submarine force culture has way too many corrupt & foul practices, including whore mongering and tolerance of porn. Deny it or ignore it or even promote it as they may, these are undeniably leadership problems.

Captain Lindstrom is a case-in-point of this, but he's just the tip of the cultural iceberg.

There's no reason whatsoever that the members of the submarine force can't be men of honor...but that's certainly not the first thought that comes to my mind when I think of submariners. This prison culture crap has got to go.

Who knows...maybe the women can help bring this cultural shift about...but why can't the men be men of honor on their own?

My husband and I met in KBay, while I was at Group Ten (where Lindstrom was the COS) and my husband was on a sub. Capt. Lindstrom was one of the kindest, most generous people either of us had (or have) ever met in our Navy careers. I was honored to stand in his retirement. My husband, who is still in, just learned of this last week and it left me crushed and so sad... especially for the precious children that were violated for his "vice." As much as I admired Tim (and adored his wife, Cindy) five years is a ridiculously mild sentence for a man deemed a "sophisticated" collector of porn, whose "collection" began during his time at Group.
