CNO On USS Pasadena
Navy NewsStand has a picture of the CNO and MCPON on the mess decks of USS Pasadena (SSN 752) in Pearl:
You can download the hi-res version here and see what kind of condiments they're including in an SSN crew's mess nowadays.Seeing the Sailors in their dungarees brought back all the discussions on the old boat of why they always made us put away our poopy suits when some bigwig came onboard. I could almost see the reason for it back in the early '90s -- when poopy suits were submarine-specific -- but now that the whole fleet is wearing them, I'm not sure why the Sub Force feels they need to hide from the CNO and MCPON the fact that Sailors wear coveralls when they're onboard.
Off-topic: Seeing the picture of the crew's mess on a submarine reminded me of a sig line on an E-mail I got from a sub guy who had gotten out, went to work for a vendor, and became a rider:

any word on whether they were underway or inport? if inport, that may be why no poopies.
i love the PO1 staring longingly at his breakfast as it goes cold. could be the next "hey shipwreck" story line.

Underway or inport doesn't really matter anymore when it comes to poopie suits. They are allowed in port by Uniform Regs and currently all but one of the submarines homeported in San Diego allows the crew to wear coveralls inport.
Problem is the coveralls can't seem to shake the "organizational clothing" image, and many times utilities will be required in situations like major tours or VIP visits.

Personally I have always thought the submarine coveralls should be the underway uniform for the Navy. It makes a lot more sense than those goddamn blue BDU's.......

That is one of the most funny pictures I have seen in a long time.
1. PO1 Clean looking at his food, is like anon1 sez, a gread "hey shipwreck" opener.
2. The guy behind the CNO's left elbow has a face like "I'm not buying what he is selling." Perfect.
3. Am I allowed to make a comment on what the CNO is measuring with his fingers? I Know Skippy wants to.

I didn't even notice the guy behind the CNOs left elbow. As cdr salamander mentioned, he doesn't look too enthusiastic. Maybe point count is coming up and he realizes he has much better things to do. Nice creases, though.
Did anyone ever use that malt vinegar? I had a shipmate who abhorred the stuff almost the point of vomiting when he smelled it, and tormenting him was really the only use I ever found for it.

actually...did anyone ever take a second to REALIZE that THEY DON'T GET TO MAKE THE CHOICE OF WHAT UNIFORM TO WEAR? The cacky club makes that choice and the COB specifically makes that choice when he puts "The uniform of the day" in the "plan of the day."

This picture was taken in port approx year 2000. I was on the crew during this time. During 2001 we repainted the mess decks to look like the rose bowl. Aka made it look stupid.
A few stupid comments the CNO made that day include. If you can't afford housing don't get married. His answer to an enlisted man complaining about the ridiculous amount of time to get into housing in Hawaii. "The reason it takes so long to start a new pay for sailors when they become eligible for it is that the system is managed by civillians." I was thrilled that the came and made us waste a week with extra field days in exchange for such wisdom.

No this Picture was taken last year. I was there and those are my buddies who are still there. We were out to sea and they made us change into utilities. If you look at the rose bowl setup only the glass remains and the stupid paintings were covered up with ugly paneling.

Yeah it was 2007 but we sure as fuck weren't out to sea. We had just got back from Eastpac shortly before this.

I was there in that room too. It was shortly after they repainted crews mess, the sky is still painted on the air ducts. They even replaced the lame yard-marked floor tiles! We were definitely in-port though, they made us put on utilities for the CNO visit.
