Groton Rally Turnout Disappointing
As the BRAC commissioners left Groton yesterday, Subase supporters had hoped that up to 5,000 people would line Rte. 12 to show the visitors how much the community supports the base. It appears that they fell a little bit short of the estimate; the Norwich Bulletin describes the turnout as in the "hundreds" while The Day was more upbeat with their headline, but when it came to estimating the crowd could only come up with one person saying that he had heard estimates of "1,500 to 2,500" people. Although I've only seen a few pictures, my guess is that the Norwich Bulletin number is probably more accurate; I guess EB didn't give their people paid time off.
