How Many Submariners Can Fit On A 688 Bridge?

It looks like the answer is six (plus a 7th guy in the cockpit), based on this photo of USS Newport News (SSN 750) getting underway for a deployment earlier this week:

Interestingly, I don't see anyone with an M-16 up there; I guess that requirement's gone away INCONUS.

Update 1117 08 Oct: An observant reader points out that there is, in fact, a gun visible on the bridge:

Well, you dont see it all. They mounted a machine gun on a pedastal stand on the deck aft of the sail. I was there, my son, shown in the picture (right side) was the OOD.

OOD for underway for deployment always went to the guy the CO trusted the most, since that's one U/W evolution you don't want to mess up. Your son must be doing a great job.

The captain does have a lot of confidence in him.(Hot shot Geogia Tech graduate.)The squadron commander and his staff were on the pier giving honors as they shifted colors and pulled away. He and the captain joined the boat at the same time, he was then a newly minted, submarine ensign, his first assignment. He likes his work..not sure yet if its a career or not

Somehow I just can't imagine the bridge crew in the new Navy cammies from Task Force Uniform and no ball caps. They might blend into each other. God forbid if one of them fell overboard.

I think we've got this beat. Getting underway for my last deployment we had eight! This pic is minutes before underway, with seven. And as we left the pier, you can see the two pilots added and one Nav ET subtracted makes eight.

Oh, and BTW, that ship is the much maligned Albuquerque.
