Attn: Naval Academy Midshipmen And Staff

I understand that being at the USNA is tough duty, what with having to deal with all the wannabe martinet seniors who don't realize that they're about 8 months away from becoming the 2nd most useless thing there is in the Navy -- an unqualified Ensign. (The most useless thing? A Naval Academy midshipman on their 1st Class cruise.)

That being the case, I'm sure there are some of you who like good music. If so, you're in luck -- the world's greatest geek troubadour is coming to Annapolis tonight! If you're 21 or older (or have a fake ID) you need to go see Jonathan Coulton at the Rams Head On Stage at 7 p.m. tonight. To understand why JoCo is the musical hero of geeks everywhere (and let's face it -- if you're at the Academy, you are a geek, whether or not you want to admit it) go to this page and listen to "Code Monkey", "The Future Soon", "Skullcrusher Island", "Re: Your Brains", and "Mandelbrot Set". (The links in the song titles go to YouTube videos a fan put together. "Code Monkey" is clearly the most famous of his songs, but I probably like "Mandelbrot Set" the best.)

So, if you're in Annapolis tonight, it's well worth the $20 to see this show while he's still playing in small venues. Give into your inner geek -- the pay's pretty good. And when you meet JoCo after the show (which you will) make sure to tell him Bubblehead sent you -- and to get his butt to Boise on his next tour!

Glad to know that I was the most useless thing 13 months ago and am now currently the 2nd most useless thing. I appreciate the vote of confidence.

Anyway, after the big win against Air Force yesterday, I doubt anybody went to this.

P.S. The Direct Input Limited Duty Officers (DILDO's) at NPPTC are probably more worthless than an unqualified Ensign.

The Direct Input Limited Duty Officers (DILDO's) at NPPTC are probably more worthless than an unqualified Ensign.

And even more worthless are the DILDO's who haven't gotten qualified to teach yet.

I had 4 skippers on two different boats in SD during the early 90's.. Best one was ROTC... Academy boys just too abrasive and sligtly arrogant.. IC LPO served on Pogy in the 80's under then CDR Archie Clemins(ROTC) and said the same...

I love those Academy generalizations. In my 3 year sea tour we punched 2 Ensigns off the boat for not being able to qualify. First was a scholarship NROTC grad, second was a OCS product. We didn't trust the OCS grad to operate the periscope in port.
(We) Academy grads may be arrogant and abrasive, but I'll take one any day - you know you'll get the job done.
That being said, I also worked with some GREAT ROTC and OCS grads, especially my first Engineer and XO.
Let's just all agree that the DILDOs are the most worthless thing.

Another ringknocker generalization: THEY don't have thin skin, you can't get to them....

I should point out that my generalization of unqualified Ensigns being worthless applies equally to NROTC or OCS types. The only reason that NROTC midshipmen might be marginally more useful than a USNA midshipman is they might know some different card games or jokes that were popular in their region.

How do you get invited to the dances at the Naval Academy nowdays? I used to go in the 70's and had alot of fun. Do they still have "mixers" on Sunday afternoons? If not, what do they have that is similar (informal get togethers)? I now have daughters & their girlfriends who want to go since I told them how much fun they were. Thanks!

I'm sorry, but I'm pretty sure that and unrated E-1 or E-2 is probably more useless considering the only thing they are qualified to do is sweep and chip paint. Lay off the ensigns, at least they are getting ready to shoulder responsibility.

To the guy writing this blog-you are a giant stupid fucking enlisted faggot. If I had my way, I would exercise my long lost officer right to take a whip and fucking flay the skin off of your back.

Fuck you very much!

Not sure if this is too late. The Midshipmen these days are getting a wider range of training. Not sure if the 1st Class cruise is producing a different product. Funny how the subject never goes away. For anyone with friends interested in applying to the / an Academy, there is http://toughestschoolsintheworld.com/ . Useful if applying. Third most useless is...
