Tournament Time

With the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament now in full swing (leading up to the inevitable victory of the Kansas Jayhawks on April 5th), I renew my call to the media to show restraint in anointing teams as "Cinderella". From this post in 2006, I repeat my two rules that should be followed before bestowing this title on any team:
1) They must have beaten at least two higher-seeded teams in the tournament.

2) The only exception to Rule 1) is if a 16 seed ever beats a 1 seed.
As you see, unless Duke or Syracuse gets beat tonight, the first time a "Cinderella" could potentially be named would be on Saturday. Even then, I would hesitate to name Washington as a Cinderella if they beat New Mexico, since I think that beating a team from the Mountain West Conference shouldn't really count.

How 'bout that Big East? Isn't it cute when people think that conference is supposedly the best in basketball? They're so funny...

Update 1327 20 March: OK, so St. Mary's now qualifies as a "Cinderella", but let's face it -- it appears that beating a "Big Least" team this year isn't really that much of a surprise...

I've rooted against Kansas since the days of Danny Manning. I thought he was over rated.

I think I am just jealous because my school doesn't really shine on the national sports scene and we didn't get to say rock chalk Jayhawk all the time. The only one more irritating than that one is War Eagle. just my opinion.

@whoami? - I graduated from Kansas in 1988, the year Manning led KU to the National Championship. Having watched basically all his games, I can assure you that, despite all the hype, he was not at all overrated. I saw him make passes that would have been on the Top Ten Assists of all time list had his teammates had been heads up enough to expect them. He was truly an outstanding college basketball player.

Well at least someone at Cornell U. knows how to handle their balls.

All the static about the big dog teams sort of reminds me of a story about Buella the Rock Locker, aka, lithium bromide units...

Go Big Red!!! And even with all the comments associated with CDR Cima, the B'ball team is off to the Sweet Sixteen...and I do believe based on your criteria that this qualifies as Cinderella-but Jay Bilas is on to something!!

Purdue squeaks by to play another one.

Cornell has a tough match with Kentucky but maybe they will put up a good game. Still, it is refreshing that the basketball team can effectively use their balls properly. Maybe they can teach others at Cornell just how that works.

What happened to Kansas? This must be rigged, lol. Is that NBA ref who was gambling and fixing games now working for the NCAA? Probably not.

Some kid with a track record of picking wins. He picked Cornell getting to the Kentucky game and his overall prediction is PURDUE.

He has been accurate for his last 48 picks if the news is accurate.

He has Autism but is some kind of a math genuis.

Purdue, who would of thunk they would even be this far?

For you math whizs, what are the odds that this kid successfuly picked the first 48 games of the 2010 NCAA Championships? Are these astronomical or what?

He picked Purdue as the one?
