Female Officers Report To SOBC

Hoping against hope that this can generate a useful discussion, here's a Navy announcement that eight female officers reported to Groton for the Submarine Officer Basic Course earlier this week, and here's a DoD video announcing same:

According to the February 2011 Submarine Officer Detailer Community Status Brief, there were 18 female prospective submarine officers in the Nuclear Power pipeline, and eight prospective female submarine Supply Officers. This Navy Times story says that 10 of them have completed Nuclear Power School and moved on to prototype as of late April. While it's possible that there are a group of women that are going to SOBC between NPS and NPTU, I'm guessing that the eight officers who just reported to Groton are the Chops. I haven't heard if any of the original 18 nukes selected have been attrited yet, but the initial plan of putting two female nukes and one female Chop on each of 8 Ohio-class boats indicates that they're planning on losing up to two of the nukes, which is probably normal officer attrition -- of course, previous submarine officers haven't had to worry about pregnancy contributing to the dropout rate.

Update 1456 11 May: It looks like these eight young officers are actually nukes who are taking the "NPS/SOBC/NPTU" path, which totally sucks for anyone who draws that particular short straw; as a commenter mentioned, SOBC is supposed to be the chance to relax between nuke training and your first boat, instead of spending the whole time being worried about prototype and trying to remember everything from Nuke School.

I was interested in Pravda's take on this story. Excerpt:
What if the initiative will become a starting point for numerous sex scandals in the US navy? The wives of US submariners do not welcome the idea either. Needless to say that if two submariners, a man and a woman, want to have sex on board a sub, they will face a big problem of finding some room for it. Anyway, the command of the US Navy hopes that women's presence on nuclear subs will not result in an eruption of sexual activity.
The author of this article, a former submariner of the Russian navy, recollected a story, which happened on board a nuclear submarine of the Northern Fleet. The story took place at the end of the perestroika period, when sex toys began to appear in small commercial stores in the country. The submarine was navigating for two months, when it suddenly became known that submariners started to catch a sexually transmitted infection one after another.
It was later revealed that the wife of an executive officer submariners gave him a sex toy - a rubber woman - prior to his departure. The officer had a separate cabin, so he could please himself with a toy woman from time to time. A young submariner found the appealing toy when he was cleaning the officer's cabin. The young man decided to give the toy a try.
The news about the toy was spread on the submarine very quickly. Apparently, one of the submariners was already infected with a veneral disease, which the rubber woman subsequently spread among the others.
One may say for certain that Russian women will never serve on Russian submarines. No one can say, of course, what is going to happen in 100 or more years, but for the time being it seems absolutely unacceptable and out of the question.
That pretty much says it all.

1 female was rolled back at power school due to psychological reasons, all others did well.

Why are they sending the chops to SOBC already if they are all supposed to show up at the same time?

Hopefully those chops realize they will not be worshiped like tin gods (aka how swo's get treated). Everyone gets mistreated, deal with it. After all, happiness can neither be created nor destroyed - only stolen.

Current 8 are line officers between nuke school and prototype. The following 10 will show up late summer/early fall after prototype on the way to the boat. Chops may show up around the same time.

Is that just stock footage or the actual selectees prior to graduation, since they're all wearing midshipman collar devices?

Either way, hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

SOBC between power school and prototype? Dang, that would suck. SOBC was the reward for making it through the nuke training pipeline.

Perhaps not women officers on submarines.

I bet the footage was made back when the announced the women o-ganger thing. Probably made it right after their interviews at NR - a year ago.

BTW, they look like a bunch of dorks, so they'll fit right in. The problems, if any, will be romantic in nature - I know of several surface nuc couples. I asked a couple of ROs who got hitched whether their relationship was technical lesbian... (she laughed, he didnt)

Tin gods? Nah, but they'll think everyone is trying to get into their pants (and some will be, but not all).
Finally, if one gets knocked up, will they short-cycle the chop from the off-crew? Best to link all these females into one great collective, if one gets pregnant, you all get washed out.

I know, won't happen.

Remember that it takes two to get pregnant. The guy should be washed out as well. I know that I am ancient, but I worry about the knowledge decay between NPS and Prototype with a stop at SOBC. It was hard enough going directly to prototype from NPS. They will have to spend a month relearning the information forgotten while learning about sonar, ESM, Navigation, etc. I agree that SOBC is the reward for successfully completing the nuc portion of the pipeline.

Sequences do get out of whack. Mine was sub school, nuc boat, diesel to qualify, NPS, then prototype, then Bettis, then new construction SSN in what at the time was considered foreign shore duty. Ah, the good old days.

Mabus recently said that female enlisted crew are going to be on attack subs. That is actual girl type chicks not the diesel butch officers who are the "first females in these roles" in the Navy. Watch out for 20 percent pregnancy attrition at sea.

Last I heard, they were perma-changing SOBC to be earlier, though I thought it was even going to be prior to NPS.

Re: Remember that it takes two to get pregnant. The guy should be washed out as well.

Are you referring to one getting pregnant underway? So a boat would then lose two people? Without going into the whole frat thing, how many wardrooms can lose 2 JOs and support a full watchbill?

And if you're referring to the pipeline, that's assuming he was a fellow student. In any case, the onus is on the females to not get pregnant. So long as the sex wasn't violating UCMJ regulations (frat, in the barracks (as officers??), rape, etc...) why should the males get punished? Because they don't provide watch team backup and say "hey, we shouldn't do this, you might get pregnant"? Hell no! She's a chick, she's been one for over 20 years, she knows how her body works, she's responsible for herself.

Anonymous NPSPro said...

From a current NPS student:

-The roll was for eye issues, not psych.

-The pipeline has been backed up for quite some time, mainly the prototypes due to some maintenance issues. As a result a lot are going to SOBC first. They are trying to push the females through so they hit the fleet at around the same time. Nearly all of us males are going to SOBC first, then prototype, and not before a few months of hold time.

Maybe it's a bad translation, but did the Pravda article make a categorical prediction and then (in the next sentence!) say that it's not possible to predict the future?

Did you not read the Pravda article? It could be any number of dudes. What if that is the case?

I'd prefer to serve on a crew with no women. It would be an extreme distraction and jeopardize missions if any hanky panky is going on. It's not like they can just surface and remove the offending crew at the next port or fly them off with the next helicopter mail drop.

I suppose on those boats nobody will scream for the steel pu*&y to get the shi*&ers nice and shiny (or if they do that guy better get ready to shoot pool). I hope these women have a good sense of humor and they don't take themselves too seriously, I also hope they understand that they are entering a community that has never had women. My fear is they will have a chip on their shoulders as though they are crusaders for womens lib. The video said that some where academy grads, so much for having a good sense of humor and not taking themselves too seriously. Keep them away from the machinery room and sonar shack on the mid watch and we should be good.

Most of the oldies over at Rontini's are against it (of course) with a few exceptions (the usual cheerleader who posted here earlier).

Who cares? The sub force needs funding and will whore themselves (no pun intended) out to get it.

It looks like a real screwjob. I'd care less about the lack of a break at SOBC and more about forgetting stuff.

For those getting their panties into a wad about whether the females will have a sense of humor...I've known plenty of surface nuc chicks, enlisted and officer. There are the same percentages of cool people/jerks as found amongst males. As long as they bring in baby nucs as opposed to surface chiefs, it will be fine. Chiefs will never make it.

Any number of dudes? Really? We DNA checked UBL in 30 minutes. The problem will be proving someone had sex on board if they were not caught in flagrante dilecto.

As for the RF navy, since when do we care what other countries do with their subs? Only 4 countries currently have women underway on subs, so it isn't like we are with the majority on this one.

Female defence contractors have been seariding in US subs since the mid 80's.

The only disqualification is a bad reaction to the depo-provera shots used to prevent menstruation. Being on the rag would increase the hotel load too much.

Go ask Aussie bubbleheads - male or female - how its gone for us. We have 3 month patrols too, though we use 3500ton donks not teakettles. We also don't have enough good people so we can waste 50% of the potential talent just because they're the wrong sex, or wrong race for that matter.

I've said it before and I'll say it again....I have absolutely no problems with females, gays, etc serving on subs, if and, only if they are made to adhere to the EXACT SAME STANDARDS as every other sailor who serves, NO EXCEPTIONS, NO SPECIAL TREATMENT/FAVORS!

If it isn't done in this manner, then you are only setting yourself up for some serious problems. If people can hack it, then more power to them, if not, then get rid of them. I think the issues with women in surface fleet revolve around the double standard of enforcement of various rules between men and women.

I am a JO on boat slated to get females. It pisses me off that now I will have to go trudging off half-naked to the crew's head to take a long overdue shower before getting my three hours sleep because some "equality princess" is in the O-head.

Equally angering is that they will inherit the JO Jungle right of the bat. I spent my first year on the boat in BR1.

I just qualified fish. They will be coming to me for checkouts. I will be merciless.

I hate my life.

May the Almighty grant Mercy on the JO end of the Wardroom.

Wow, a lot of support on here, thanks guys. I'm one of the female Chops going to a boat sans "chip on shoulder". Most of us are prior enlisted and not one (since I know them all) are bra burners or "equality princesses". There were not enough male officers volunteering for sub duty to keep the force strong, so this initiative was not about political motivation. Not looking to change the world, just trying to help the process be less painful since we've been around the Navy a lot longer than the baby nukes. Speaking of babies, just fyi... it's truly insulting to assume that we are even going to be attracted to our coworkers, awful presumptuous, let alone want to be intimate with them. Just throwing it out there. ALL submarine JOs get treated like garbage until their qualified, I don't expect us to be any different. This whole show of testosterone and complaining while flexing is no way to show that your opinions are right.
