Moored To The Tender

Here's a picture from the Navy website (no story attached; only mention I could find in the press is this error-laden report from Israeli conspiracy theory site DEBKAfile.) of USS Bremerton (SSN 698) pulling up next to submarine tender USS Emory S. Land (AS 39) recently in Mina Sulman, Bahrain. Been there, done that, back in 1992. Bremerton deployed in April.

Meanwhile, the Russian press has a story about a CO who was fired (although they say he wasn't fired) for yelling at a senior officer.

Where did Debka get its info on the Big E and the Bush? I laughed for ten minutes. And the Bremerton was the last boat I was on back in 92.

Myself and another LT (now CO of TRF Kings Bay) used to manage "tenderless" SSN upkeeps in the Persian Gulf from 92-94 from COMSUBGRU 7 REP GUAM. Took 30 - 40 sailors, tools and parts via commercial air to the gulf and did most of the work without having to move a 1200 person tender. Obviously there are things that need a tender in place - like weapons re-load after throwing tomahawks at Ghadaffi.
Wonder if they still ship all the paint to the Gulf to do topside painting without the US Environmental constraints :-).

Is it common for the Officers to set a bad example by leaning/sitting on the safety railings on top of the sail?

Are you referring to the guy on the far left? The one not wearing a ball cap or khakis? And you know he's an officer how?

How do I know he is an officer? I don't but he is in the presence of a lot of officers and presumeably the CO is there. If he is the Pilot or a civilian observer, he still needs to set a good example and it is the COs and his officers responsiblity to enfore that.

Could this be an unused picture from April of La Jolla/Emory S. Land in Goa, India?

And officers getting fired for yelling at people? It's amazing we ever got out of the 1990's. Had one or two of them, but their saving grace was that they knew how to drive the hell out of the boat.

Fuck yeah they will.....if the yelling is directed at their boss and not just some lowly XO or below.

Unless I'm missing something in that picture, a single hand grasping a rail while standing (upright) next to it is far from leaning.

Nonetheless, of course officers are know to set bad examples from time to time. They are human. Still, hands in pockets and the use of first names within earshot of juniors is unacceptable.

Decemaber 99 up just in the gap after immediate put to sea from pearl we had been locked on by a MIG-25. Immediate emergency dived to crush deep and blow a full load of countermeasures. Thsu the MIG was drawn off but locked onto onef there own subs! And it launched weapons. We of course helped out wanting to not to caused this incident without us so we bottomed out after firing at the MIG weapons and interecpted them and everything was just fine. But just after it was okay and until then when this guy comes out of the shack with no pants on but only a corno cob in his butt and he pulls it out. This made a surprise and scared ys but his head hit real hard on the had to medevac. But it took to long and he got better anyways. And then so nothing on the tender for the doctor.

The tender is now USNS Emory S. Land, operated by Military Sealift Command.

The Tender is still USS Emory S Land, although MSC owns and operates most (if not all) of the Engineering and Deck functions, and many of the Supply functions. It is commanded by a USN Captain instead of an MSC Ship's Master. Both Tenders have a USN Repair Dept, Medical, and Supply personnel assigned.

.....I think that the Bahrain national flag on the tug outboard gives away the location of the picture. A port call in Manama, Bahrain in the summer - been there, done that, got the sweat-soaked t-shirt.

Alinitothuk: What shack are you referring to? Would that be the comm shack, sonar shack, ELT shack, crew's satellite phone booth (ie squawk shack), CPO toilet stall (spank shack)? without the proper reference the whole corn cob thing is somewhat suspect.
Also did you detect the MIG as a broad band or narrow band contact? Were you able to use the pulse height discriminator to determine the actual variant of the MiG? A Mig-25A is only air to air while a "E" model is a dedicated recon platform. the "S" model however, is capable of short-term hydrobaric operations and can really mess up your field day.
Keep smoking the wacky weed, your BS stinks but it is clever.

Bareassed in the shack might have been any shack, but he also mentioned a corn cob sticking out of the guy's ass it suddenly became obvious it was the sonar shack.

Yes, that is the badfish herself, I know, I was there. Rod r, we had planned to paint, but it turns out that the bahrain support activity dosen't like to store hazmat, so when we pulled in they had already got rid of all the paint we ordered. Surprisingly enough, it feels hotter here in Hawaii than it did in the gulf. Must be the humidity. Anyway in the words of our captain "win wars!"
