COCC Scores A MUC
The USS City of Corpus Christi (SSN-705), homeported in Guam, recently received a Meritorious Unit Commendation for operations from August 2003 to September 2004. It's good to see a Guam boat doing well, and I have a special interest in the "City of", as she's often known, because their CO used to be my CO on the Jimmy Carter. While the article in the local paper says this is the boat's first MUC, I really doubt that's the case -- COCC was a really hot boat back in the mid-80s (when future NR head "Skip" Bowman was her CO) and I imagine she got some unit awards then.
For those who might be wondering, COCC has such an unusual name because of pressure from Catholic peace groups before her commissioning -- they didn't think naming a warship "Body of Christ" was very peaceful, so that's why they added the "City of" to it.
Going deep...

There was an old auxiliary ship named USS Santa Cruz. There's a sub named "USS Sante Fe" (or "Santa Fe" -- this article from CSP has both spellings.)

i was at EB for engineers school when they launched the "city of". what a circus. evangelicals, rabid catholics, and the usual mix of long haired patchouli soaked freakazoids crowding around the gates at EB. glad to say i experienced it, but i'm also glad they had about 300 cops. otherwise, i'd have been in jail for killing that wild-haired and hairy legged female critter that splashed chicken blood all over me as i was going into the gate (ticket in hand).
