Road Trip!
The Kennedy boys are taking off bright and early Friday morning to drive to Seattle for PAX -- the 4th annual Penny Arcade Expo for everything having to do with video games. We went shopping tonight for approved guy road trip food; here's what we bought:
That should be enough to get the three of us there. My teenage sons wanted to go to the Expo because they're uber-gamers, but you might be wondering what why a boring old man would want to spend his 44th birthday surrounded by teenage nerdcore aficianados. The answer is -- I really have no idea what will be happening at this place. The only thing I know is that there apparently aren't going to be Booth Babes, which is disappointing. I'm hoping there might be some exhibits from the people who make submarine simulations, so I can possibly review those games. Other than that, I'm just going to enjoy spending time with my sons before they start heading off in a couple of years.
If I have Internet access, I'll try to file some reports. If not, I'll tell you what happened sometime next week.
Update 2330 26 Aug: Just got back; there weren't any submarine games there. I'll submit a trip report sometime later this week anyway.

You really know how to live! Your sons are so lucky to have a father with such refined tastes.
One thing does concern me, though. Where are the Slim Jims and Ho-Hos?

I'd recommend against taking a ferry ride.
But don't worry, if something happens, the Post-Intelligencer won't publish the photos unless you're charged with a crime.

The Slim Jims and Ho-Hos have probably been consumed already.

Dude, the ratio of snack to teenager is totally off.
So, where are the slim jims and ho hos or do we have proper clearance for that intel?

heck, i don't even see any beef jerky. what kind of loadout is that? no red pistachios in a jar either. you sure you were on submarines? we couldn't get underway even for a pier to drydock move without jerkey and pistachios.

The S-girls (Skate, Swordish, Sargo, and Seadragon) often used to berth at S-13 in Pearl Harbor because they were the only boats that could fit into those tight confines, relying on their shallower draft, smaller beam, and twin screws for extra maneuverability.
Fortunately, S-13 was less than a boat length from Beeman's (chief's club one one side and white hats' club on the other) and about half that to the Subase snack shack. For a Monday morning underway, quarters on the pier always was followed by an all-hands raiding party on the snack shack. A single crew could take almost half of their stock for a 5-day underway. Jolly Ranchers were an underway favorite of many people.
Once at sea, cigarettes sometimes became a prized commodity if the underway got extended. I once saw them selling for a dollar apiece.

Taking teenage boys and that's all you're stocked up on?
The food won't last fifty miles, you need at least three times as many soft drinks.

Twinkies? Bubblehead, really?
