RIMPAC 2010 Videos

RIMPAC 2010 is going on through 01 August; for those who didn't get enough when they were a PACFLT Sailor, here are a bunch of videos for you to relive the experience. The only submarine one I could find is this rather boring one of USS Pasadena (SSN 752) leaving Pearl:

Anyone have any favorite memories of large multinational exercises? I just remember how long morning colors took when all the different nations' boats were in port if one was unlucky enough to get caught outside.

When we participated in RIMPAC, our 637 ruled the seas! After it was all done we had a big bash at the Bowfin Memorial where many American submariners tried to drink with our British and Canadian counterparts. One of the wives gave a lei to a British guy, who spent the rest of the night saying, "I got layed by Dave Howard's wife." Other thing I remember was the desire not to get caught outside during morning colors. Saluting for six national anthems seemed like a long time. All in all, it was great experience.

On my first boat, the mighty Plunger, we played in a large exercise in the South China Sea in the 80's.

Don't remember too much about the exercise, but the port visits to Subic, Hong Kong and Pattaya Beach made it all worth it!

We called it "Sperm Pac"!

God I love Asian women!

I was on shore support staff for Exercise Ocean Safari in the Atlantic in the late seventies. I was assigned to the channel command in Plymouth, UK for two weeks and two of our JOs were assigned to assist at the Brit center in Northwood. Midway through the exercise, one of these JOs noticed that at FINEX there were no instructions to insure there was no mutual interference among the twelve or so subs participating in the exercise to say nothing about the observing VICTOR since all of the exercise areas disappeared at FINEX. This caused quite a stir among the "elephants" and finally, all subs were directed to surface at FINEX and steam away from the exercise area for a number of hours before being permitted to submerge again. Each sub was given a course vector that would take them in the direction of their planned port call. This alert JO got a written commendation and a pat on the back. The Commanders and LCDRS from US and Brit staff, not so much.

Played with the French a while back in the Bay of Biscay. AHP-6 is a little vague on the PROPER configuration of the French PSEA's. Spent a day and a half with my fingers crossed hoping we got it right! (We did!)

RIMPAC? First time I layed eyes on the PMI plan ('96-ish), it made my head explode! Asked myself why it had to be so complicated until I figured out that it wasn't so much a CHOICE as a lack of options!

Spring 1962 Operation Tulungan in the PI. Major Amphib exercise. SS-339, SS-348 (my boat) and SS-242 were OpFor. Lot of flares launched out of ATR signal ejector simulating torpedo shooting. A ton of photos through the scope. After exercise entire 7th fleet in Subic bay. 113 ships including three carriers, heavy cruiser, two light cruisers, DD's lots of amphibs. CO NavSta Subic only allowed one section outside gate per day. Olongapo just swallowed'em up and said send us more.......

Ya, thats the way it was in them days.......Keep a zero bubble.......

Rimpac 1988...sponsored an Aussie boat. One of their guys was found passed out drunk in a Conex box. Took him to Tripler (aka, "Crippler") AMC where his blood was drawn and tested at a BAC of 0.78. Yes, you read that right. 0.78, or about TEN times the legal limit. They said that at the time it was one of the highest BAC's they had ever seen from someone who lived.

I remember in 95 or 96 a couple Russian warships pulled into Pearl. Pretty cool seeing them up close and trading uniform items with them. Colors in the morning...I always tried to be indoors before the half hour marathon started!

At the beginning of RimPac 1986 they played the US, Brit and Japanese national anthems, but when the ships from the fourth country (we had Brit, Canadian and Australian visitors, too) arrived they switched to just playing the bugle call for morning colours.

We carried a handful of SEALs around for a few days before sending them off on their little rubber boat one night. Somewhere along the way a reference to "Special Navy Advanced Karate Experts and Extraordinary Action Team for Environmental Reconnaissance (S.N.A.K.E.E.A.T.E.R.)" appeared in one of the daily status messages.

Love the fact that you can see the BPS-15 radar radiating at the level of most of the bridge watchstander's groinal region in the Pasadena video (around 37 seconds in). Guess they didn't need vasectomies...
