"What We Really Need Around Here Are More One- And Two-Star Admirals"

The O-7 board results have been announced. The only names I picked up on right away as being Submariners are CAPT Michael Jabaley, CAPT Stuart Munsch, and CAPT Kenneth Perry; there should be one or two others. [Bell-ringer 1616: A commenter says the other Submariner on the list is CAPT Dave Kriete.]

Also, here's the O-8 list that was recently announced. From a previous thread's comment:
Navy Rear Adm. (lower half) Barry L. Bruner has been nominated for appointment to the rank of rear admiral. Bruner is currently serving as commander, Submarine Group Ten, Kings Bay, Ga.

Navy Rear Adm. (lower half) Jerry K. Burroughs has been nominated for appointment to the rank of rear admiral. Burroughs is currently serving as program executive officer for command, control, communications and intelligence, Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command, San Diego, Calif.

Navy Rear Adm. (lower half) Bradley R. Gehrke has been nominated for appointment to the rank of rear admiral. Gehrke is currently serving as defense attache China, Defense Intelligence Agency, Beijing, China.

Navy Rear Adm. (lower half) David C. Johnson has been nominated for appointment to the rank of rear admiral. Johnson is currently serving as program executive officer for submarines, Washington, Navy Yard, Washington, D.C.

Navy Rear Adm. (lower half) Robert L. Thomas Jr. has been nominated for appointment to the rank of rear admiral. Thomas is currently serving as commander, Submarine Group Seven/commander, Task Force Seven Four/commander, Task Force Five Four, Yokosuka, Japan.
Congratulations to all those officers selected! I've seen plenty of dumb O-6s (mostly Marines), but I've never known a dumb Flag or General Officer. Misguided ones, yes, but never dumb.

Considering the D.C. politics involved in attaining flag, I must agree with you, BH. Rickover outsmarted several congresses, kept his job, and even got promoted despite doing his politically unpopular successes.

As to Marine O-6s, I detect humor which may be lost on 75% of your non-military readership. My hat is off to Marines, every last one of them with an honorable discharge!

Jabaley was a JO on the Drum when McAneny was the XO. Good guy, unless you had cloven hooves.

Robert Thomas was one of my XOs on Asheville. He's one of the exceptional ones. I would suspect that having picked up a second star they will next bump him from SUBGRU 7 to being the next COMSUBPAC.

Stuart Munsch was NAV on JEFFERSON CITY when we ran aground in '94. He was absolved of anything related to it (rightly so, IMHO), and I am glad to see he made it. He was a good guy then, and it appears he has excelled.

Hmm, guess if you can run your ship aground as Navigator and almost again as CO and still make flag, we really have gotten past the "zero-defects" mentality in the submarine force!

Joel, I am guessing the "Age Old Question" post didn't go over so well at home?

Jabaley was my XO on the 705. One of my favorite officers that I ever worked with. Happy to see that he has risen higher than the CO he served under.

After watching the Navy Brass take the lead in promoting homosexuality in the service I will never be able to hear the term Rear Admiral without laughing again.

Navy Rear Adm. (lower half) James D. Cloyd has been nominated for appointment to the rank of rear admiral.

Not a submariner, but Dan Cloyd is nuclear-trained (he was one of my students at Charleston when he came through as a PXO). I really liked him and am happy to see that he continues to do well.

Ken Perry is dirtbag and doesn't have a clue. He's spent his career screwing people over and made his way to flag. Every since Mullen fired him he's been trying to climb his way back into the game. Looks like he's done it. He the SACEUR's EA now and is also the senior Navy officer at SHAPE. He doesn't support his people and in some cases tries to hurt them. None of the Navy folks have any respect for him here, they simply tolerate him and can't wait for him to leave. It's too bad he lacks honor and integrity. He's done things that I care not to post here because they border on criminal. He gives the Navy a bad name.

Brad Gehrke was my neighbor while at the Naval Postgraduate School (1984). While there he completely rebuilt the interior of a beat-up former drug house, and did a great job. He occasionally borrowed tools from me, too. He was a really good guy and I'm really glad to see him do so well. Jim
