As we head into the long weekend, here's a video the Navy put out last month about USS Maine (SSBN 741):

Meanwhile, the Russians are reporting that they'll put one of their new Borey-class boomers in each ocean. That means NUC opportunities for both east and west coast American SSNs (as well as spare-part cannibalization nightmares for the Russkie supply officers). w00t!

Silly show, certainly, and you won't be watching the first two episodes alone. If writer's don't have a credible suspense 'hook' in by the end of the 2nd show, however, they will have lost their potential audience with this series.
While hypothesizing about phony CO launch discretion at least the writers could have modeled the character after a known CO headcase and kill two birds with one stone --- remember CAPT Holly Graf?
The main reason I'll be watching (besides the storyline bait in the trailer) would be to see if the credits thank the USN for assistance or, worse, name a Navy technical advisor.
Wouldn't that be quite an alarming surprise?

Got out in '90 so obviously never set foot on a Virginia class. One of the Biz Insider pics taken in the Torpedo Room seems to show the space with an overhead well over seven feet high. Is that accurate? If so, do the other spaces have that much head room? Being 6'3" tall, I would have welcomed much more headroom than was available on my old 637 class.

I don't know about headroom, but berthing passage is something like only 18" wide - everyone goes through sideways. I am glad I won't be on one. They can keep the bells & whistles. Speaking of which, some of the data shown on the video on the screen in the ER looked like it should be NOFORN (but not NNPI). /shrug

The "Engine Room" slides are picture of AMR. Nothing to due with reactor control.
That particular display panel controlled the diesel. Look closely, you should have been able to figure that out.
1797 rpm. NFO tank level.

Yes the Torpedo room is quite large when there are no wepons onboard. Its like a large dancefloor. We had a Senior Chief who was 6'10" he only had to duck in a few places.
As for 18" bearthing passage, thats only in the Fwd upper level berthing. And its only 24 racks. And those racks have a Head with shower between them.
I would go back to a Virgina in a heartbeat! Boomers are not that great!

Some parts of the Sonar STDA display are classified due to giving away a capability in the story about the VA class. Because I test the new Sonar systems I can see the classified parts being shown in the picture. If someone blows up the photo they might see the speed and depth of ownship as well and that could be classified as well.

Don't be mad because you were last in your class at ST 'A" school and you were bagged with a fast boat out of Groton. It sucks to be you, the guy who can only bring a shoe box worth of stuff and most of your belongings will be stowed in an aux tank.
I was fortunate to be on a boomer and then I was sentenced to Groton for many years. My Parole board said I could return to a normal life in society so I returned to the PACNORWEST. There we feasted on surf and turf once a week with fresh fruit and salad daily. I had to bring bubble wrap to keep my stuff from rolling around in the spacious confines of my many drawers and lockers. My biggest decisions daily, which space would I work out in; the eliptical in ML or should I hit the weights and treadmill in LL.After a relaxing meal, I would have a cup of coffee and read my email or work on a college course to better my mind and soul. Man, what a life. People pay money for this with cruise lines! I feel sorry for my fast attack brothers, Sally Strothers should send them a care package.

ARCI=acoustic rapid COTS insertion. COTS=commercial off the shelf. Acronym within an acronym that is used all the time in today's submarine Navy...just sayin'. How boomers became buuposb I have no idea.
Btw, loved the response at 6:26 even though I disagree. I have done both and I can tell you in most cases it is the bottom of the class graduating that get stuck with boomers or those who are trying to take the easy path. Fast boat ST Sailors vacation on boomers. Boomer ST Sailors play catch up for a portion of their tour (& some never do) until they are fast boat trained.

I love how the PACNORWEST is lionized here. Is it the 40 degree rainy weather for 8 months of the year or a place whose claim to fame is "good coffee"? I think it's appropriate though that the boomer guys can visit Forks and walk in the places where their heroes Edward the Vampire or Jacob the Werewolf roamed in their favorite book series. If I were a Sasquatch I wouldn't want to live in that area.

Did 4 SSNs and then to 1 SSBN.
SSBN was the easiest sea duty I ever had. Boat gone half the time and still get sea pay! When out to sea, they tried to act like a SSN, with tracking and shooting exercise torpedoes. Sitting around at xxx feet waiting for a message to launch missiles is BORING!
SSNs were more involved because it belonged to one crew. Missions and underways were more fun. We got overseas port visits, did some interesting stuff off the coast of xxxxxxxx.
One nice thing on the SSBN was, the nukes weren't always number one when it came to awards and stuff. Bad thing is, the Missile Techs were.
The equipment on the SSN was more upto date than the SSBN.
Every CO I had on a SSN got the Legion of Merit as their departing award. The one SSBN CO who turned over when I was there got a Navy Comm for his end of tour.

I love hearing about how tough Fast Attack sailors are...
My experience was quite different in Holy Loch. We received a number of fast attack sailors on our boomer and to a man they were beaten into the ground by Refit.
Refit sucks and there is no way to prepare for it until you experience it. The fast attack boys certainly complained about how "easy" Patrol was, but they all HATED Refit to a man.

I speak for all fast attack tough sailors, boomer fags embarass us. You should design your own set of dolphins that incorporate the boomer pin. Maybe a building with a set of bottom feeding catfish butted up against it. There is a big difference in what real submariners do and what the SSBN's call underway. I will always be proud that I call the "Submarine Capital of the World" home and I will never step foot on a SSBN.

I have been in the Navy 20 years, rode both fast attack and boomer. The crews make the command, not the platform. Sit back and bash the other because deep down you were jealous. Both bring something to the table. Without each we would be a different country. I earned and re-earned my dolphins on both platforms. Proud to have both pins.

I am hearing a lot of talk about how tough it is to be a fast boat sailor. The current Fast Boat west pac is far different than what it was 20 years ago. How many of you tough guys were on the boats 20 years ago? How many of you had to do 3 week vrps in Subic. Now that is tough duty. I have served on SSNs, BNs, GNs and even a slow attack. Todays GNs have it tough. Those guys are doing some hard work. BNs, hell ya, it’s a great ride. Lots of room to work out and great food. So I guess the bottom line, bubble heads rule and it’s a lot better to serve with a bubble head than been in the army or airforce. And yes, I was in the army too. I was never in the airforce, but did some time with them. Those guys have it made.

That's great you guys got all this SSN pride, really it is. When given the option of an SSN schedule vs. lots of time at HOME and PREDICTABLE SCHEDULES: Tough isn't the word I would be looking for.
Why did we all choose the Navy and not Marine Infantry or Army Ground Pounders? Because we're not interested in being shot at, that's why.
