Cruise Ship Drives Off Pirates... Progressives Complain
Additional information out on the recent unsuccessful pirate attack on a cruise ship Seabourn Spirit off Somalia indicates that the crew used a non-lethal "directed beam" sonic weapon (the Long Range Acoustic Device) to aid in driving off the pirates. (More on the LRAD can be found here and here.)
Seems like most civilized people would be happy with this development, right? Well, it turns out that some of the "progressives" over at Democratic Underground are more worried about the effect of an airborne sonic weapon on undersea creatures. (To their credit, some of the other posters did set the person straight.)
Also, I read today that the cruise line called in the U.S. Navy EODs to get rid of the unexploded ordnance remaining on the ship. While I wouldn't want to deal with dud RPG rounds, going TAD to the Seychelles isn't a bad way to spend a weekend... (Actually, it looks like they were already there.) BZ, EODMU Eight!
Bell-ringer 0928 08 Nov: As expected, Eagle1 has more on the attack.

Bubblehead, some witnesses reported the pirates smiling. Now, we know they were probably grimacing from acute ear pain. Next time, no doubt, they will be better prepared with hearing protection muffs like jet engine techs and flight deck crews wear.

Hopefully the cruise ships will be better prepared with high powered sniper rifles...

Sweet Reason, a 20mm Gatling gun is my vote. Turn attack boats into toothpicks.

Actually, there are some photos showing smiling and waving pirates waving their RPG and other weapons, see here.
Probably a "before" photo...
